We stayed in Galveston leading up to the end of the year. We choose the area because we wanted to have some warm weather, access to the beach and be close enough to Houston to fly home for Christmas. Jamaica Beach RV Resort was a little ways south of most of the things to do on the island, but we didn’t mind taking the drive along the coast each time we drove into town. The weather turned out to be a mixed bag. We had some very warm days and some pretty cold ones, but we tried to make the most of all of them.
When we arrived and checked in, the owner was very friendly and spent a lot of time giving us tips on things to do in the area. We did end up taking two of his suggestions. The first was to check out the Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens. The second was to take the Galveston ferry, back over to the mainland. The ferry, where we ended up seeing some dolphins swimming in the bay, ended up being one of our highlights from this stay.
This RV resort is really well kept, and they are continuing to expand with more parking and additional amenities. Since it ended up being a bit cold half the time we were there, we didn’t get to take advantage of some things like mini-golf or swim in the pools. Although, Steffanie did take advantage the hot tub. All of the sites are level concrete pads. The landscaping is well done and there is generous amount of space between neighbors. They don’t allow parking on the grass, since it is so well manicured, so parking the was a little bit tight.
This place would be fantastic in the warmer months, and you would find no shortage of things to stay busy. No matter the season, the number one reason to stay at this park would definitely be the beach access. You do have to cross a street, but it is less than a 5 minute walk to gain access to the beach that is completely public and spans the whole length of Galveston Island.
Steffanie did yoga on the beach when it was warm enough, and we took a couple sunset walks. We were so surprised by how few people were around. At times it felt like we were the only people on the whole beach.
We were glad that we got to experience the island outside peak tourist season, and we’d recommend it if big crowds aren’t your thing either. However, we do imagine that on a hot summer day, we’d have plenty to enjoy at this RV park and on the beaches in Galveston.
Even though it was the off season, we expected a lot more people to be out on the beach. There are so many vacation homes on the island and very few were being used while we were there. We enjoyed all of the colorfully painted homes.
We were parked there for three weeks, but our stay was shortened by our trip home for Christmas. We would recommend Jamaica Beach RV Resort. It is a great value for how much is offered. As I mentioned to take full advantage of this RV park, visit in warmer months. We certainly would have enjoyed a longer stay, but we had plans in Austin for New Years.
