It worked out that we were in Peoria near my family for my birthday. It was great to be able to spend some time with friends and family before we really embarked on our adventure. On July 8th, the night before my birthday, Mike and I got together with my parents, my two sisters and their significant others, and my best friend and her husband at Kelleher’s Irish Pub for dinner. After dinner, we headed down to the river for a sunset boat ride.
Even though I grow up near Peoria, I had never gone out on the Spirit of Peoria Riverboat. The Spirit of Peoria is a 160 foot long, 385 passenger paddle boat with four decks that cruises up and down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. They offer a variety of cruises from a simple sightseeing cruises that are about an hour long, to a 5-day, 4-night cruise.
We took a two hour Moonlight Cruise with a live band. We arrived just in time, found a spot on the top deck by the balcony, and grabbed some drinks from the bar. The weather was perfect; I couldn’t have asked for a better night. It was cool to watch the paddle wheel in action. The sunset was gorgeous and the company was great. It was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday.
