Even though we have technically been living the RV life since the beginning of July, we consider Fennville, MI the first stop on our adventure. Before that, we stayed at an RV park in St. Louis, where we lived for 8 years, and Peoria, where I grew up. So when we left Peoria on July 17, it felt like our journey was really beginning!
A couple months ago, after we announced our plans, Mike’s childhood friend, Dominic, contacted him to extend an invite to stay at his lake house in Michigan if we were in the area. We took him up on the offer, and we’re so glad that we did!
Dominic and his wife, Andrea, greeted us on Sunday evening with a steak dinner and really made us feel at home. That night, they took us out on Hutchins Lake for a night swim. They had to leave to go back to Chicago, but left us everything we could need and more. We worked from the back patio facing the lake during the day. In the evenings, we took the paddle boat or the jetski out on the lake. We also had a chance to check out Sangatuck Brewery, FennValley Winery, and went to Crane’s Restaurant, Bakery and Winery a couple times.
On Thursday night, we drove to Holland, Michigan for opening night of Star Trek: Beyond. Before the movie, went into downtown Holland to find somewhere to eat. The downtown area was super cute, and they just happened to have street performers every Thursday night in the summer, so the streets were alive with energy. We ended up eating at The Curragh Irish Pub, which was perfect since we had our wedding reception at a Curragh in Chicago almost two years ago!
Friday, Dominic came back from Chicago for the weekend. That evening, he took us out on his boat. We went wakeboarding and skiing. (Well, one of us wakeboarded. The other one, not so much. 😉 ) Saturday, Mike and I went to Saugatuck Dunes State Park and hiked down to Lake Michigan. Later that day, after a quick nap, we headed back out on the lake where we relaxed in the water at the sandbar. That night, we went to local Fennville pizza place and bar, The Hop N.
We did so much in one week, and there was so much more we would have liked to do! If we have the opportunity, we would love to visit the area again. This week will be tough to beat!
Thanks Dominic and Andrea for letting us stay at your lake house and for your over the top generosity!
