Our search for the perfect truck to tow our future home began at the end of January when we went to the St. Louis Auto Show. We sat in a lot of trucks and got an idea of what we liked and didn’t like. From the very beginning, we really liked the GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado, and Toyota Tundra. We were original focused on 1/2 ton trucks, but on the advisement of family and friends who were truck owners, we decided that we needed something with a higher tow capacity.
We spent a few weekends going to dealerships, and hadn’t ruled out the Toyota Tundra yet, because it was rated to tow up to 10,000 lbs. For awhile, it looked like a Tundra would be the one. However, the trailer we are looking at his a dry weight of about 7,000 lbs., and with the water tanks full and all of our stuff in it, we would be pushing the 10,000 pound limit. The last thing we wanted was to not buy enough truck for our trailer.
We had to up our price range just a bit, and found some nice 3/4 ton trucks in our budget to test drive. When Mike first drove the 2011 Silverado 2500, he knew it was the one. I took a little more convincing – the loud after-market exhaust is just a little much for me! However, the truck has grown on me, and I’m sure we made the right choice. Even though its a 2011, it is super clean and only has 57,000 miles. It’s the LTZ model – which means it has all the bells and whistles like remote start, leather seats, a super nice auto and navigation system, etc. While those things are in no way necessary, they are certainly nice to have, especially since we will be spending a lot of time in it.
Now we just need to find a trailer…
